We are a registered charity providing peer support groups for grieving children, youth and their families in the Halton and Peel area.
The Lighthouse is a forum for companionship with others who too have experienced a “life-altering death” , which means they also learn to cope with the loss of mother or father, brother or sister. The journey of acceptance and healing takes time, space and understanding. The Lighthouse is such a space.
The experience of a “life-altering death” changes the entire family and will affect a child’s life from then onwards. Bereaved children, experiencing a major crisis changing the fundamental structure of their family unit, find at the Lighthouse a community of understanding and support. We provide empathy, create trust, build courage and motivation.
As families struggle to cope with the aftermath of the death, each in their own way, the Lighthouse supports primarily the child and youth, who often feel powerless, angry and excluded following a close death. At the Lighthouse they can grieve and ask questions, find resources in themselves and through new friendships, so that the children adjust to their “new normal” and recover.
Oftentimes a death of a parent has also financial repercussions; this is why we offer our programs free of charge. The family will receive our support as long as it is needed, irrespective of costs.
